On the night of July 17, 1996 TWA flight 800 left New York's JFK Airport en-route to it' destination of Paris, France. At approximately 8:31 PM a strange explosion ripped through the Boeing 747 jumbo jet violently taking the lives of 230 helpless people that on board the aircraft and threw them into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Long Island. Almost immediately, as news of the tragedy began to circulate, theories and possible explanations of the cause began to surface. Was it a terrorist bomb? This was a possible option in Americans eyes. With the bombing of Pam Am's flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland a few years back and the bombing at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta at nearly the same time, this theory was quickly becoming a high possibility. Or was it a mechanical failure? The possibility of a mechanical failure is always there, but to this magnitude it was very questionable. Not many airplanes just explode in mid-air for no reason. All possible angles have to be considered. This brings us to the third and perhaps most overwhelming explanation for this tragedy. Did an U.S. missile mistakenly bring down TWA 800 over the Atlantic Ocean on July 17, 1996? It seems a lot of evidence points in that direction. The amount of material that has been found could have convinced almost anyone that this is the explanation for the misfortune that occurred. Although all of the government agencies that were involved, FBI, FAA, and the Navy vehemently deny that this is a possible cause, one must question the credibility of the U.S. government. The most logical question at this point would have to be; how could the Military mistakenly shoot down a commercial airplane? The Navy and other branches of armed forces routinely carryout practice maneuvers at different positions around the world. The location where TWA 800 exploded is right at the heart of one such area. Off the coast of Long Island the Navy maintains warning zones that were used for training procedures. These areas carry labels W-105 and W-107. These zones, not in use everyday, were confirmed as being active during the night of July 17. When a particular area is active any type of military operation can occur, including activities that are considered to be dangerous. In fact the Airman's Information Manual defines the dangers of warning areas such as these they read as Follows: ?Warning areas denote the existence of unusual, often invisible artillery firing aerial gunnery, or guided missiles (Goddard 2).? This definition shows that the pilots should have been aware of the dangers that evening. It is very possible that the Navy was conducting test flights at the time. Combating incoming missiles is a top priority of the U.S. To combat this threat the military would counter by firing a missile to intercept the incoming one before it reaches its target. Apparently, the Navy was testing this technology on July 17. Considering the fact that technology and test can and do go wrong, its not far fetched to think that one of those missiles could have been fired and missed its target. Instead, the missile locked onto the larger more easily spotted TWA jumbo jet and blew it right out of the sky! The Navy obviously denies the charges of such a mistake on their part. Navy Admiral Edward Kristensen said area W-105 and W-107 were not typically used for missile training. Although he did not deny that activity does occur there. The Navy did admit that there was a P-3 Orion anti-submarine plane and a missile cruiser, the USS Normandy, in the area. To deny the possible involvement of the Orion Lt. Rob Newell, a Navy spokesman, said the Orion does not carry missiles. But, the military book, Janes All The World's Aircraft, states: the P-3 is capable of carrying missiles. The Navy also tried to remove the USS Normandy from being a contributor by saying that ?the cursier was 185 miles to the south?to far away to have hit TWA 800 with a missile.? When I first attend my class I totally get confused and dont know what is going on, as the time passes after attending two of three classes I get familiar to what is going in the class, all credit goes to my module tutor who really deliver the quality teaching. The Module (Effective Research and Professional Practice) I have attend lay down the foundation stone for me to the entire course. This course gives me the opportunity to learn how would be the professional toward the study. The first exercise is SWOT analysis that provide me opportunity to express my Strengths, weakness, opportunity and Threats, which can help my tutor to have view of my capability for the studies so that he/she can deliver the quality teaching in order to have the better understanding towards the concern subject. The best part of the SWOT analysis is that I can express what I want from the course that I am going to take what would be my future plans. The second exercise helping me to develop the analytical skills. The article is about the characterizing the knowledge management in the small business environment, the questioner on this article helping me to develop the ability of reading, writing, and leaning skills more effectively. It also help me to have the broader look, how research can be taking place what area would be taking into the consideration while researching. How to apply proper methodology for the research that it is very important the way this article is written down help me to develop it, because the way I am going to approach to my studies is very important especially in my project. Joseph J. Ellis: Founding Brothers Founding Brothers a collection of stories by Joseph J. Ellis that discusses various events following the American Revolution and their impact on the budding Republic. The first theme talks about all key individuals that had a conglomerate of personalities and ideologies among the founding fathers. Because of this, it balanced the government and prevented one over arching outlook from sculpting the new government. This can easily transition into the second theme by Ellis. Despite the fact that this group of minds behind the birth of our government, had many different passionate perceptions on how said government be formed, they were still bound by close personal relationships. The second theme is present throughout the entire book. Especially in â€Å"The Dinner†, which I will discuss in more detail later on. Many of the important decisions early on were not only deliberated in public, but were also debated and contested in private at meetings and dinner parties. In the third theme, it was in their culminating interest to sweep slavery under the rug. Even though they knew it was an important issue, they also knew bringing it to public would wreak havoc on the new but feeble government. In the fourth theme, Ellis illustrates how the founding fathers used the advantages described in the previous themes to romanticized the interactions they had. They were very intelligent men who knew what kind of decisions they implemented would be important moments in history. They used their personal relationships in private meetings to shape how future generations would view them and the new government. They had specific control over how the events would be recorded. In my essay I will discuss the â€Å"value requirements† needed to gain the Diploma of Social Work and give 6 examples from my own work experience that I think are relevant from a legal perspective. Within the essay I shall begin by defining the term ‘values'. Values are based on the belief that something is good and desirable, the acceptable standard of a person, group or society within. It defines what is important, worthwhile and worth striving for. Values are very much influenced by the views that people have about how society should be organised and how social relationships should be regulated. Values are distinguished from knowledge. Traditionally Social Work values for examples are user or client self-determination, acceptance, non-judgemental attitudes and confidentiality these can also be a guide of conduct and actions of social workers. Ref. : Dictionary of Social Work I'm working in a direct access hostel that accommodates homeless men. These men are suffering from either alcohol or drug addiction and also from mental health problems. One of my values is not to drink alcohol or at least only in a considered amount. Also using drugs is something, which I for myself consider is against my value-belief. The implication towards one part of my client group, those men who are dependent on alcohol, could be that I preach them you should not drink so much and to do this and that . I could treat them in a disadvantage way because I disagree with their lifestyle. Putting them down and may make them feel there are â€Å"low† or even worse, not worth my time. They might be all alcoholics, drug-addicts etc. but I still have to treat everyone as an individual and according to his or her needs. They may have all different reasons while they depend on alcohol and drugs (i. e. loss of partner, marriage breakdown, repossession of house or flat, bankruptcy). I look at one persons life and look what happen in their life, the problems they had and if there are pattern and solutions to help that particular person to do one thing or another. I can put my own life experience into account if it is relevant and may help. Each individual is also unique in their way. Every human being is different like a fingerprint is, so is every ones values and diversity's (i. . sexual orientation, religion, culture, nationality, skin colour, class and age). Every one likes to be respected but this in turn should be a value for each one to respect anyone else. To recognise all the differences in each individual in each different case and use these differences and to help to help themselves and that promotes the people's right to choose. People who are dependent on alcohol and drugs can not be treated all in the same way. They are all individuals and unique and got to be treated as such. I have to use their backgrounds or beliefs and can not apply the same remedy for everybody to cure them. In the hostel we also have Muslim residents, who do not eat pork because of their religious beliefs. We have to advise the canteen staff accordingly to this to prepare different meals for them that do not came in conflict with their religion. Also to share a room with somebody who keeps an animal is out of question for a Muslim, because in their religion it is seen as â€Å"dirty†, not clean. So I have to make sure to put him with somebody else or in a single room to respect and value his needs. A client or resident comes to have a word with me in private. But he wants that what is said in private does not to go any further than between the two of us. I have to tell him that in my position I can not guarantee this. Than I have to take what he says to me on board and consider if this kind of information can really be kept away form other members of staff. In my working environment I have the duty to share â€Å"information† with my other colleges, team-leader, counsellor and management. If for example he tells me that while he is drinking heavily he also becomes aggressive and might sometimes â€Å"blow his fuse† if anybody annoys him, but does not anybody to know because people may start to treat him differently. This is a matter where I have to pass this information on. Even if he has a right to privacy but in these kind of circumstances the staff and other residents are put in danger. Information has to be revealed to staff only and some sort of precocious measures have to be taken. But if there is only minor disclosures than it will be kept confidential. If one of the residents has HIV/Aids this is a matter of strict confidentiality and will not disclosed to anyone else within or outside the organisation, or recorded in the resident's file, without the person's permission. The only exception in that case is if life-threatening injury or illness occurs. Disclosure to medical personnel is essential to treatment. Also if major blood loss takes place and there is a risk of transmission to other residents or staff. The way we assist people to improve there lives simply starts with befriending, providing material and recreational resources. Also activities like scrabble, pool, table-tennis, chess groups, darts and competitions, video and bingo nights, photography, football, craft. Registering with GP's and also at occasions go for day trips to the seaside and visiting theatres. Organising IT courses and helping with finding a job and resettlement. Health care and counselling is also provided. I speak to residents about any kind of problems or help they may want and advise them about referrals to other hostels, benefits and personnel matters. I come a lot of times in contact with people addicted to drugs and assist them in the counselling process to try to get them of drugs By trying them to get off drugs it helps them to take control of their life and their life takes a different direction. I have to speak to a resident on a one to one basis that if he is taking drugs on the premises he will lose his right to stay at the hostel and as a consequence be evicted. This will hopefully protect himself from using drugs and also protect other drug dependent residents who want to become clean with their addiction, to falling back into old habits. We also help in a way that we give medical advice and medicaments to residents in collusion with medical staff. One incident happen not a long time ago where a white resident went into the lift and just as the lift doors were closing another four black residents jumped in. He then got out of the lift and soon as the lift went up he complained to me that he could not go with â€Å"these† residents in the same lift. I asked why, and he responded â€Å"you know what these black are alike†. I said no and asked him the same question but he refused to explain to me â€Å"why†. It was in my view a certain racist behaviour. But he was not racist verbally (he has not spoken out what he really meant by this), so there was nothing I could do except speak to him and let him know that the black residents may see this as racist act and it might be hurting them. Another incident involved myself with one of the residents making Nazi-salutes at one day and on the next giving head butting signs. At this occasion an incident report was made and the resident being giving immediately notice to leave within 24 hours. When I encounter any racism, discrimination or disadvantage I pull the resident by side or take him to the interview room and have a word with him. Depending how severe the incident was I have to write an incident report and this goes than to the team-leader or manager who than decides what action are be taken. Our hostel policy states no person will be treated less favourably than any other person because of their race, colour, ethnic or national origin, appearance, gender, sexuality, marital status, physical disability, health status, age, religious, spiritual or political beliefs or offending history (Ref. Bridge Housing Association, Equal Opportunities Policy). A lot of people say HIV/Aids is a homosexual disease. If I have a homosexual resident at the hostel and can not stigmatise them by saying all homosexuals must have aids and treat him in a totally different manner then anyone else. Also a lot of people assume that alcoholics talk a lot of rubbish, is not very coherent, falls all over the place and looks shabby. If I deal now with an alcoholic who have these appearance I could automatically assume there is no point for me really to try to deal with this person because he do not know what I'm talking about anyway. The drink has got to him and because of the problems I may associate with alcoholism I could treat them all in the same way. With this attitude and thinking he is not worth my time because he would not remember anyway what I'm talking about I would just do enough (paperwork) without giving him the help he might really need. When a resident is totally drunk I give a cup of coffee or support him to his bedroom where he can sleep for a while to get sober. When he is in a state where I can talk to him I will do so he in private with no other residents present. Just because the person does have an alcohol dependency I do not treat him as that. I treat him as a normal individual and treat him in a way that if I would be an alcoholic, the way I would like to be treated. To have values is a good thing because at enables you to set goals for yourself and to achieve objectives. But there is also a down side where other people values can come into conflict with my own.

Delivering Lily Essay

The author wrote his story in first person perspective. He started the story by his wonders how delivering a baby might be like. Phillip Lopate was definitely nervous but he knew he would try his best to support his wife. Throughout the story it stays imagery. You can almost feel their emotions and see the scenery. He also uses some dialogue going back and forth with his wife. It first takes place at their home waiting to make sure Cheryl’s contractions were occurring regularly. It almost seemed Phillip was more nervous than Cheryl. Once they arrived to the hospital they got assigned an empty room, â€Å"it was not cozy, it was not charming, it was not tiny, it was not big, it was not even decrepit, it had nothing for the eye to fasten on.† (Lopate 423) Cheryl and Phillip were both disappointed by the room. There were couple words I did have to look up for the meaning, but overall the sentence structures were simple to read. His description made it easy to feel you were actually in part of the story. Also when he described the nurses, it almost felt you knew their personality and what they look like. Phillip goes back and forth by what was happening at that time and his thoughts, I could almost feel I was in his perspective. I cannot relate to this story, but I can understand some situation he mentioned from watching movies and reading books. Many emotions were felt through this special time of Philip Lopate: anxious, nervous, impatient, joyous, blissful, cheerful, loving, and relieved the most noticeable. Phillip is a proud man, proud of his wife and proud of becoming Lily’s father. He wants to record every part of Lily’s life and is planning to write longer on her first year. On the last page, he mentions he will do anything to keep his writing piece alive. He definitely did succeed keeping Delivering Lily alive. Even though I was not able to relate, I am sure everyone who has delivered their baby could have related to this writing piece, but I did feel like I was there with him knowing every detail he was thinking. This story had used all the punctuation structures mentioned in Hieroglyphics from our homework assignment. It was interesting seeing other ways of using a semicolon and the dashes. Overall, the story was full of anxious and loving events on delivering Lily. Both happy parents are ready for the ir journey with their loving child Lily.
